An initiative to transform Peachtree Road through the heart of Buckhead's commercial/hotel district into a more pedestrian-friendly boulevard is gaining momentum. The Buckhead Community Improvement District (CID) is a special district in which property owners pay a self-imposed tax for improvements.

According to Buckheadlines, the CID's newsletter, the district "has applied for $17 million in federal and state funding to begin the Peachtree Corridor Project. The Buckhead CID and the City of Atlanta will provide an additional $7.5 million in local funds."

The CID generally covers Peachtree Road from Shadowlawn to Peachtree Dunwoody; Piedmont Road from Peachtree to Habersham; and Lenox Road (Buckhead Loop) from Piedmont to East Paces Ferry.

The project's goals include "redesign of Peachtree Road ... [as] a regional model for transforming a suburban, automobile dependent area in to a livable urban center, where sustained, balanced growth is compatible with a good quality of life. Highlights ... include better and safer pedestrian street crossings and walkways; creation of parks and commons; better pedestrian access to redesigned, more user-friendly train and bus stops; and intradistrict shuttles."

According to Buckheadlines, "Construction is scheduled to begin June 1 on improvements to 23 of the Buckhead commercial district's busiest intersections."

Intersections targeted for improvements include:

Peachtree Road at its intersections with Lenox Road, Wieuca Road, Roxboro Road, Oak Valley Road, Financial Center, Swisshotel, Roswell Road and Sardis Road;
Piedmont Road at its intersections with Lenox Road, Pharr Road and East Paces Ferry Road;
And the intersections of Lenox Road and East Paces Ferry Road, East Paces Ferry Road and Oak Valley Road, Wieuca Road and Phipps Drive, Lenox Road and Kingsboro Road, Lenox Road and Wright Avenue and Roxboro Road and Wieuca Road.

A 2001 study is planned to consider ways to improve pedestrian connections between commercial properties along Peachtree Road and between the Buckhead Loop and Peachtree.
