Peachtree Road sign

One of America's best known streets, Peachtree winds north from downtown Atlanta through the heart of Buckhead, closely following the Chattahoochee ridge route of the Indian-era Peachtree Trail. Downtown, it's Peachtree Street, but after it merges with West Peachtree and heads north, it becomes Peachtree Road.

Officially, the change occurs in the 1800 block, just north of the Brookwood rail station: Huey's, at 1816, is the last Peachtree Street address and the Peachtree Palisades building, at 1819, is the first Peachtree Road address.

Apartments, shopping areas, restaurants and bars line what once was a street of grand Atlanta homes.

Only the Randolph-Lucas House at 2494 Peachtree offers a trace of that era. The red brick Georgian Revival home, at the intersection of Peachtree and Lindbergh Drive, was built by a great-great grandson of Thomas Jefferson. More about this historic building is available on the Atlanta Urban Design Commission Web site.

Lindbergh Drive, which joins Peachtree Road at the Randolph-Lucas House, was named for Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, who visited Atlanta on Oct. 11, 1927, after his historic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. The city proclaimed Lindbergh Day and the Buckhead street was named in his honor. Old and new roofs
Cathedral of St. Philip In 1935, another famed aviator visited Atlanta. Amelia Earhart arrived to recieve an honorary degree from Oglethorpe University. Only two years later, she would begin the fatal flight over the Pacific Ocean that would take her into history.
Some of Atlanta's grandest churches, such as the Cathedral of St. Philip, are on Peachtree, as well as some of the region's glitziest shopping centers: Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza.Writers have always found Peachtree irresistible, and it's almost a character in Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" and Anne Rivers Siddons' "Peachtree Road."

Jack J. Spalding, who in 1885 founded one of Atlanta's top law firms, King & Spalding, was perhaps the earliest proponent of Peachtree Road as a grand boulevard through Buckhead. In 1908, he persuaded property owners on both sides of the road to donate frontage to allow creation of a 80-foot-wide roadway from the Brookwood bridge to the center of Buckhead Village.

A Community Improvement District created by the Buckhead Coalition is developing plans to "transform Peachtree into a world-class boulevard" with wide sidewalks and a canopy of trees. The Urban Land Institute has offered preliminary ideas. Click here to view their designs.

Possible new developments:

Developers plan an 11-story office building next to Huey's restaurant on the site of a Wendy's restaurant.

Songy Partners is considering a new hotel/office tower complex at the former Art Institute of Atlanta location at 3376 Peachtree. If preleasing goes well, construction could start in the second quarter of 2004.

Crescent Resources LLC is considering a new office tower on a three-acre tract across Lenox Road from Monarch Tower and just behind Phipps Plaza.

A 10-story medical office building, Sheffield Medical Building II, is planned at the corner of Peachtree and Collier roads, behind the current Sheffield Medical Building.

At the Rooms to Go site at the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont, developers are planning a 40-story luxury condominium tower. Famed architect  I.M. Pei has been hired to design the building.

Westwood Properties is planning a $30 multi-story residential and retail complex at 2171 Peachtree Road.

At the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont, a high-end retail, residential and office development is proposed for the 12.5 acres that wrap around the Grand Hyatt Atlanta Hotel. The project is expected to include luxury residential condos.

Capital City Plaza developer, Rubenstein Co., is proposing a 12-story office tower on the undeveloped land next to the 17-story One Capital City Plaza on Peachtree Road next to the Buckhead MARTA station. Overall zoning for the site includes three office towers and a hotel and air rights to develop over MARTA and Ga. 400.
